Tangent Space is an East Sussex-based, family-run architectural practice. Since our start in 2000, we have been focused on sustainable, low energy, low carbon and low impact architecture. How this combines with the building structures typical of the south east of England is a challenge and one that never stops testing us!
Every project is unique, just as all your ideas are. We explore every avenue to bring your dream building to life, working with you to build the home you love to live in and leaving a legacy of longevity.
Mark Wakelin

Mark Wakelin, Lead Architectural Designer
Mark studied Architectural Technology at the University of Brighton and began his career working on listed buildings and church renovations, developing a deep understanding of sensitive, long-lasting design. He then broadened his experience across residential and commercial projects before founding Tangent Space, where sustainability is at the heart of every decision. Passionate about low-impact design, Mark integrates energy-efficient solutions, renewable technologies, and environmentally responsible materials into all projects. He has a particular expertise in Passivhaus construction and is committed to advancing its adoption in the UK, creating homes and buildings that are comfortable, healthy, and future-proof.
As lead architect, Mark guides each project from initial enquiry through design, planning, and construction, ensuring that sustainability is fully embedded without compromising aesthetics, functionality, or the client’s vision.
Tanya Haslehurst, Architect
Tanya is a qualified architect with over 10 years’ post–Part III experience. She supports Mark through the planning and technical stages of our projects, helping to develop designs from initial concept through to detailed construction information. Her role includes preparing planning submissions, coordinating technical drawings, liaising with consultants and contractors, and ensuring projects progress smoothly through each stage of delivery.
Freya Wakelin, Practice Manager
Freya runs the day to day events in the office, dealing with both existing and new clients and managing the work flow on all projects.. With a background in the arts, she brings both creativity and strong organisational skills to the team. Freya also leads the practice’s social media and content creation, developing engaging material that showcases projects and communicates the studio’s design approach while strengthening the practice’s online presence.
