The story of the Kent Barn Conversion

A Grade II listed timber-framed structure dating back to the late 16th century – begins with a site left disused for over 30 years and a previously refused planning application. Bringing the historic building back to life presented a whole new set of challenges: navigating strict heritage constraints, overcoming severe Flood Zone 3 risks, and addressing significant structural deterioration, all while satisfying Maidstone Borough’s rigorous rural planning policies. By raising the structure above flood levels, repairing decayed timbers with a sensitive dwarf-wall intervention, and minimising external changes, the project secures a long-term future for the barn without sacrificing its historic character.
